Crunchy, Flavorful Black Walnuts

When you want an intense nutty flavor paired with an amazingly satisfying crunch, few things compare to our big, rich black walnuts. These nuts arrive shelled and in chunky pieces so they’re ready for snacking and baking. We also carry in-shell black walnuts.

If you want to add the luxurious flavor of these nuts to your favorite recipes that call for ordinary English walnuts, do so carefully. Black walnuts are much more potent, so it's best to either reduce the amount of nuts called for in the recipe or use a mixture of both walnut varieties.

Hand-Harvested, Shelled Black Walnuts

Getting these nuts to customers is truly a labor of love, as nearly every step in the cultivation, harvesting, hulling and final preparation of shelled black walnuts is still done by hand. The nuts fall naturally from the trees in late autumn, where they must be harvested directly from the forest floor. The green, messy hulls are then removed, the nuts are dried, the extra-tough nutshells are cracked and, finally, these delicacies can be plucked out.

When we buy black walnuts, we love to think about all the hands-on effort that it took to bring them to us. We hope you do, too!

Black Walnut Health Benefits

If you're watching your cholesterol, these nuts can help make your diet a whole lot tastier. Black walnuts are very low in saturated fat, yet very high in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, which are the good fats that can lower bad cholesterol while maintaining good cholesterol.

Adding a few of these nuts to any dish can help boost its protein, iron and fiber content without adding sugar. They also make a nutritionally similar substitute for the tree nuts that are enjoyed in the now-popular and healthy Mediterranean diets.

You can even eat black walnuts for better overall cardiovascular health, as they contain large amounts of omega-3 fats, which help support cardiovascular function.

Walnut Studies

1) Lower Cholesterol Levels: Walnuts are one of the richest food sources of of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid, which may help lower cholesterol levels. Researchers have compared the effects of walnut and fatty fish consumption on the risk of developing coronary heart disease. They found that although both food sources are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, walnut consumption was more effective at lowering LDL "bad" cholesterol in healthy patients than fatty fish consumption. These findings were published in a 2009 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

2) Powerful Antioxidants: Walnuts are loaded with protective polyphenols! Compared to nine different types of raw and roasted nuts, walnuts contained the highest total polyphenol content, as demonstrated in a 2012 study published in the journal Food & Function. Polyphenols have antioxidant properties that have been associated with the prevention of degenerative diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases and cancers.

3) Stress Relief: Eating a handful of walnuts may help ease your mind. A 2010 study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition examined the effect of walnut and walnut oil consumption on adults with elevated LDL cholesterol levels. They found that eating walnuts helped the adults reduce their blood pressure both at rest and during times of stress.

“Thank you for coming to my rescue! I have been longing to make my late mother's cranberry bread for some time now, but could not find any black walnuts for it. (Regular walnuts just don't do justice to the recipe.) I made the bread today, and the memories (and flavor) were wonderful.”

“Got our black walnuts and cocoa nibs today. My mother in law and I were laughing at the box first, it was great! Kudos to marketing. We also loved the sample of figs, and the nuts were as delicious as we had dared hope. We are California Indians, and used to eat a lot of black walnuts, but they are hard to find these days so I bought these as a treat for her. Thanks so much and keep up the good work.”

“I bought these black walnuts for my mom's Christmas gift. She loves to bake brownies for her friends at the place she lives in and is constantly asking if I know where to buy them. Well, no, not in town. So I decided to try on-line & there you were. She'll be thrilled. She's 91yrs. old & it's about the only thing she can still do. I will try to send an email when she opens them.”

“Hi. My mother in Illinois was wanting some Black walnuts. I got online and found your company. I am very skeptical buying food online. My mother said that the delivery was great and the walnuts are fresh and yummy! Guess she's a nutty kind of gal! Thanks much!! Now she will send me some cookies with your awesome black walnuts in them. Thanks for your service!!”

“I feel we've hit 'pay dirt' with this company. I've ordered black walnuts and almond flour and both are fantastic. Both high quality and delicious. I have a Missouri-born husband who l-o-v-e-s his black walnuts and has to have them in fudge, chocolate chip cookies, Waldorf salad--and anything else he dreams up. Both of us appreciate the outstand quality of the products--which influences the end product we cook/bake. Many thanks for all the work you do to keep your standards so high. V JF”
