Nonpareils are decorative sugar confection balls used on candies, cakes, and other sweets. The name 'nonpareil' means 'without equal' in French. Nonpareil candy originally came only in white during the 18th century, but started to appear in multi-colored rainbow varieties during the 19th century. The term 'nonpareils' is also used to refer to the popular treat that sprinkles nonpareils on top of a round chocolate drop.
