Crunchy, Flavorful Black Walnuts

When you want an intense nutty flavor paired with an amazingly satisfying crunch, few things compare to our big, rich black walnuts. These nuts arrive shelled and in chunky pieces that make one of the most decadent ice cream toppings. Our customers also love to eat these walnuts in salads, as an ingredient in baked goods or just by the raw handful.

If you want to add the luxurious flavor of these nuts to your favorite recipes that call for ordinary English walnuts, do so carefully. Black walnuts are much more potent, so it's best to either reduce the amount of nuts called for in the recipe or use a mixture of both walnut varieties.

Hand-Harvested, Shelled Black Walnuts

Getting these nuts to customers is truly a labor of love, as nearly every step in the cultivation, harvesting, hulling and final preparation of shelled black walnuts is still done by hand. The nuts fall naturally from the trees in late autumn, where they must be harvested directly from the forest floor. The green, messy hulls are then removed, the nuts are dried, the extra-tough nutshells are cracked and, finally, these delicacies can be plucked out.

When we buy black walnuts, we love to think about all the hands-on effort that it took to bring them to us. We hope you do, too!

Health Tips

Black Walnut Health Tips

If you're watching your cholesterol, these nuts can help make your diet a whole lot tastier. Black walnuts are very low in saturated fat, yet very high in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, which are the good fats that can lower bad cholesterol while maintaining good cholesterol.

Adding a few of these nuts to any dish can help boost its protein, iron and fiber content without adding sugar. They also make a nutritionally similar substitute for the tree nuts that are enjoyed in the now-popular and healthy Mediterranean diets.

You can even eat black walnuts for better overall cardiovascular health, as they contain large amounts of omega-3 fats, which help support cardiovascular function.

“My order just arrived and I already made a batch of black walnut fudge, soo good”

Cless Bodily, Barstow, Ca. December 18, 2009

“My husband is from West Virginia and no walnut is a walnut unless it's a black walnut. When I opened the bag and gave the nuts to him, he said yes this is the ones. We really enjoy them.
Thank you,
Debra
Merry Christmas”

Debra, Roswell, New Mexico December 16, 2009

“I have not been able to find black walnuts or their extract for several years so I turned to the internet. Finding Nuts-on-line and also a site selling the extract (Faeries brand), I hastened to put in my orders.
Before long, I was making yummy baked goods. I even found that these strongly-flavored nuts can hold their own in toll house cookies, making a wonderful substitute for the chocolate that the doctor has told me not to eat. Now I won't be deprived when we bring out the Christmas cookie platter. Nor will I feel deprived at Easter, as I can make black walnut carrot cake with buttermilk icing. Hooray for black walnuts!”

Elinor, Cypress, California December 13, 2009

“What great service. I ordered in the evening and the next day there were my black walnuts. I was tentative about ordering as I need to make the cookies with these in a few days for a cookie exchange, but your company got them here almost immediately. And I tasted them. Yummm. ”

Melissa, Wanamassa, NJ December 10, 2009

“Wow! You guys are amazing. I received the order I placed yesterday, the following day - and this is the holidays! Lepkuchen would not be the same without black walnuts and my family would not be the same without lepkuchen for Christmas. THANKS!”

“The black walnuts are soooo good. I'm convinced that unshelled black walnuts are so hard that they were used as cannon shells in the War Between the States. You made obtaining the delicious shelled meat so easy. Thanks”

gordon, Scottsdale, Az November 13, 2009

“Having grown up with black walnuts many decades ago,,understanding the entire process, knowing how very special they are, it has been pure pleasure putting them into smaller packages this afternoon, trying not to nibble too many. A very wonderful treat. Thank you.very much. Good Luck! ”
