Crunchy, Flavorful Black Walnuts

When you want an intense nutty flavor paired with an amazingly satisfying crunch, few things compare to our big, rich black walnuts. These nuts arrive shelled and in chunky pieces so they’re ready for snacking and baking. We also carry in-shell black walnuts.

If you want to add the luxurious flavor of these nuts to your favorite recipes that call for ordinary English walnuts, do so carefully. Black walnuts are much more potent, so it's best to either reduce the amount of nuts called for in the recipe or use a mixture of both walnut varieties.

Hand-Harvested, Shelled Black Walnuts

Getting these nuts to customers is truly a labor of love, as nearly every step in the cultivation, harvesting, hulling and final preparation of shelled black walnuts is still done by hand. The nuts fall naturally from the trees in late autumn, where they must be harvested directly from the forest floor. The green, messy hulls are then removed, the nuts are dried, the extra-tough nutshells are cracked and, finally, these delicacies can be plucked out.

When we buy black walnuts, we love to think about all the hands-on effort that it took to bring them to us. We hope you do, too!

Black Walnut Health Benefits

If you're watching your cholesterol, these nuts can help make your diet a whole lot tastier. Black walnuts are very low in saturated fat, yet very high in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, which are the good fats that can lower bad cholesterol while maintaining good cholesterol.

Adding a few of these nuts to any dish can help boost its protein, iron and fiber content without adding sugar. They also make a nutritionally similar substitute for the tree nuts that are enjoyed in the now-popular and healthy Mediterranean diets.

You can even eat black walnuts for better overall cardiovascular health, as they contain large amounts of omega-3 fats, which help support cardiovascular function.

Walnut Studies

1) Lower Cholesterol Levels: Walnuts are one of the richest food sources of of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid, which may help lower cholesterol levels. Researchers have compared the effects of walnut and fatty fish consumption on the risk of developing coronary heart disease. They found that although both food sources are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, walnut consumption was more effective at lowering LDL "bad" cholesterol in healthy patients than fatty fish consumption. These findings were published in a 2009 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

2) Powerful Antioxidants: Walnuts are loaded with protective polyphenols! Compared to nine different types of raw and roasted nuts, walnuts contained the highest total polyphenol content, as demonstrated in a 2012 study published in the journal Food & Function. Polyphenols have antioxidant properties that have been associated with the prevention of degenerative diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases and cancers.

3) Stress Relief: Eating a handful of walnuts may help ease your mind. A 2010 study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition examined the effect of walnut and walnut oil consumption on adults with elevated LDL cholesterol levels. They found that eating walnuts helped the adults reduce their blood pressure both at rest and during times of stress.

“My grandpa used to get black walnuts when I was a kid. It's the only kind of nut I like. I had only had some maybe twice since he passed away 15 years ago. I'm now on my 3rd lb in about 2 months. (The chocolate covered pretzels are great, too.)It's great to be able to get them again & not only that, your service is excellent & so is your product. Thanks.”

“My relatives were thrilled with the gift of black walnuts. They were impressed with the large whole pieces of nut and wondered how you did it. Any time we have tried to shell walnuts we end up with many little pieces. Thank you for your prompt shipping.”

“I had English and Black Walnuts sent to my mother-in-law as a gift. She is 93 and was worried about using something sent through the mail. After assuring her they were perfectly fine, she made her nutrolls and they turned out even better with your walnuts, which were so fresh and tasty (we tried a few, of course).”

“Ordered black walnuts for my mother-in-law & husband - they say, "DELICIOUS!!"
Great service - THANKS! We'll be ordering again!”

, Plains, KS November 15, 2007

“The first time I tried the black walnut, I was absolutely blown away. The black walnut took me back to my childhood. We had a walnut tree out in the back yard and my brothers and sister, myself included use to get the nuts and use a hammer or brick to break open the nuts. We would then use a needle or pin to pick the meat out and eat like crazy. I've always been a nut about nuts and when I saw the black walnut I had to get them and this was back in 2006. I told my Pastor about the nuts and I had to order her about three bags. My Pastor is also from the South. Also the blueberries, strawberry are out of this world. All the nuts that you now have to buy out of the stores, my grandparents use to have these trees in their backyard. Now you're lucky if you find a pecan tree. I'm so glad I found this nuts online website. I would recommend all the products online. I can't wait to get the cherries.”
