Crunchy, Flavorful Black Walnuts

When you want an intense nutty flavor paired with an amazingly satisfying crunch, few things compare to our big, rich black walnuts. These nuts arrive shelled and in chunky pieces so they’re ready for snacking and baking. We also carry in-shell black walnuts.

If you want to add the luxurious flavor of these nuts to your favorite recipes that call for ordinary English walnuts, do so carefully. Black walnuts are much more potent, so it's best to either reduce the amount of nuts called for in the recipe or use a mixture of both walnut varieties.

Hand-Harvested, Shelled Black Walnuts

Getting these nuts to customers is truly a labor of love, as nearly every step in the cultivation, harvesting, hulling and final preparation of shelled black walnuts is still done by hand. The nuts fall naturally from the trees in late autumn, where they must be harvested directly from the forest floor. The green, messy hulls are then removed, the nuts are dried, the extra-tough nutshells are cracked and, finally, these delicacies can be plucked out.

When we buy black walnuts, we love to think about all the hands-on effort that it took to bring them to us. We hope you do, too!

Black Walnut Health Benefits

If you're watching your cholesterol, these nuts can help make your diet a whole lot tastier. Black walnuts are very low in saturated fat, yet very high in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, which are the good fats that can lower bad cholesterol while maintaining good cholesterol.

Adding a few of these nuts to any dish can help boost its protein, iron and fiber content without adding sugar. They also make a nutritionally similar substitute for the tree nuts that are enjoyed in the now-popular and healthy Mediterranean diets.

You can even eat black walnuts for better overall cardiovascular health, as they contain large amounts of omega-3 fats, which help support cardiovascular function.

Walnut Studies

1) Lower Cholesterol Levels: Walnuts are one of the richest food sources of of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid, which may help lower cholesterol levels. Researchers have compared the effects of walnut and fatty fish consumption on the risk of developing coronary heart disease. They found that although both food sources are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, walnut consumption was more effective at lowering LDL "bad" cholesterol in healthy patients than fatty fish consumption. These findings were published in a 2009 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

2) Powerful Antioxidants: Walnuts are loaded with protective polyphenols! Compared to nine different types of raw and roasted nuts, walnuts contained the highest total polyphenol content, as demonstrated in a 2012 study published in the journal Food & Function. Polyphenols have antioxidant properties that have been associated with the prevention of degenerative diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases and cancers.

3) Stress Relief: Eating a handful of walnuts may help ease your mind. A 2010 study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition examined the effect of walnut and walnut oil consumption on adults with elevated LDL cholesterol levels. They found that eating walnuts helped the adults reduce their blood pressure both at rest and during times of stress.

“I am amazed at how quickly I received my order. Of course the first thing I did was to open a bag of the Black Walnuts to taste.....I was immediately transported back to my grandmothers home in Central Missouri. She had a Black Walnut tree in her yard and I remember my daddy shelling them...anyone who has shelled black walnuts knows that is not an easy job...Thanks for the memories. I will be ordering from you again.”

“Hey you nutty folks, my order arrived today and I already ate quite a lot of the black walnuts. These and english walnuts are my favorite. We have 2 large black walnut trees in the lot across from my house, but no way could this 64 yr. old do all the work that must be done to these, so I am soooo glad I found Nuts/Online. Thanks for the speedy delivery. Linda”

“Thank goodness for NUTS ONLINE! I love to make black walnut fudge at Christmas time and use them in many of my baked items all year long. It has been harder and harder to find black walnut meats as the years have gone by. I had searched everywhere and I could only find small 3 ounce and very expensive packages of black walnut meats at any store. Finally, it hit me, search on line! I did and I found very few vendors but one in particular advertised different size packages at a great rate and fast home delivery too. I ordered 5 one pound bags and three days later my black walnuts were delivered and they are great! Thanks to NUTS ONLINE there will be many tasty holidays at my house. Keep up your great customer service and keep these great products on hand. You have no idea how much easier you have made shopping for black walnuts for me. I will definitely be a returning customer over and over again.”
