Crunchy, Flavorful Black Walnuts

When you want an intense nutty flavor paired with an amazingly satisfying crunch, few things compare to our big, rich black walnuts. These nuts arrive shelled and in chunky pieces so they’re ready for snacking and baking. We also carry in-shell black walnuts.

If you want to add the luxurious flavor of these nuts to your favorite recipes that call for ordinary English walnuts, do so carefully. Black walnuts are much more potent, so it's best to either reduce the amount of nuts called for in the recipe or use a mixture of both walnut varieties.

Hand-Harvested, Shelled Black Walnuts

Getting these nuts to customers is truly a labor of love, as nearly every step in the cultivation, harvesting, hulling and final preparation of shelled black walnuts is still done by hand. The nuts fall naturally from the trees in late autumn, where they must be harvested directly from the forest floor. The green, messy hulls are then removed, the nuts are dried, the extra-tough nutshells are cracked and, finally, these delicacies can be plucked out.

When we buy black walnuts, we love to think about all the hands-on effort that it took to bring them to us. We hope you do, too!

Black Walnut Health Benefits

If you're watching your cholesterol, these nuts can help make your diet a whole lot tastier. Black walnuts are very low in saturated fat, yet very high in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, which are the good fats that can lower bad cholesterol while maintaining good cholesterol.

Adding a few of these nuts to any dish can help boost its protein, iron and fiber content without adding sugar. They also make a nutritionally similar substitute for the tree nuts that are enjoyed in the now-popular and healthy Mediterranean diets.

You can even eat black walnuts for better overall cardiovascular health, as they contain large amounts of omega-3 fats, which help support cardiovascular function.

Walnut Studies

1) Lower Cholesterol Levels: Walnuts are one of the richest food sources of of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid, which may help lower cholesterol levels. Researchers have compared the effects of walnut and fatty fish consumption on the risk of developing coronary heart disease. They found that although both food sources are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, walnut consumption was more effective at lowering LDL "bad" cholesterol in healthy patients than fatty fish consumption. These findings were published in a 2009 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

2) Powerful Antioxidants: Walnuts are loaded with protective polyphenols! Compared to nine different types of raw and roasted nuts, walnuts contained the highest total polyphenol content, as demonstrated in a 2012 study published in the journal Food & Function. Polyphenols have antioxidant properties that have been associated with the prevention of degenerative diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases and cancers.

3) Stress Relief: Eating a handful of walnuts may help ease your mind. A 2010 study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition examined the effect of walnut and walnut oil consumption on adults with elevated LDL cholesterol levels. They found that eating walnuts helped the adults reduce their blood pressure both at rest and during times of stress.

“Today is Wed. On Mon. p.m. late, I ordered black walnuts. Fed. Ex. delivered today. I have never had such a fast delivery on any item as I live in the country. The nuts are wonderful--large pieces; and they are so fresh; flavor is outstanding. I cannot find black walnuts in the local stores, and they are my #1 choice when baking. Thank you, thank you.”

“Regarding black walnuts. I have both fond and not-so-fond memories of black walnuts from my youth in Iowa.

Absolutely loved the taste, but oh the misery of picking out those shells! Then finding out as I grew older,it wasn't always possible to find black walnuts in the stores. What a delight it has been to find Nuts Online. As someone else commented, these black walnuts are large pieces, not broken little bits. (I can admire that skill!)

Thank you for offering black walnuts. ”

“My 76 year old cousin has been raving about the black walnuts he used to enjoy in Virginia. He would pick them from his neighbor's tree and put them on the roof in the sun and then crack them and was in heaven. he was not able to find them up in New York and asked his niece to see if she could find any in Virginia but alas to no avail and then i saw your website and read the testimonials and you have made my cousin an extremely happy man. Not only were they delivered in two days but he ( a non believer) is as happy as a clam. He said they are fresh, delicious and he feels as though he was still ten years old in Virginia. Thank you so much. It won't be my last order. ”

“Black walnuts were absolutely fantastic- been a long time since I sat under the black walnut tree trying to crack those hard, hard shells and pick out the goodies with a horse shoe nail! Thanks so much. Oh yes, my husband enjoys the chocolate covered walnuts- have a hard time finding the choc covered peanuts, but these are better for you anyway! ”
