Crunchy, Flavorful Black Walnuts

When you want an intense nutty flavor paired with an amazingly satisfying crunch, few things compare to our big, rich black walnuts. These nuts arrive shelled and in chunky pieces so they’re ready for snacking and baking. We also carry in-shell black walnuts.

If you want to add the luxurious flavor of these nuts to your favorite recipes that call for ordinary English walnuts, do so carefully. Black walnuts are much more potent, so it's best to either reduce the amount of nuts called for in the recipe or use a mixture of both walnut varieties.

Hand-Harvested, Shelled Black Walnuts

Getting these nuts to customers is truly a labor of love, as nearly every step in the cultivation, harvesting, hulling and final preparation of shelled black walnuts is still done by hand. The nuts fall naturally from the trees in late autumn, where they must be harvested directly from the forest floor. The green, messy hulls are then removed, the nuts are dried, the extra-tough nutshells are cracked and, finally, these delicacies can be plucked out.

When we buy black walnuts, we love to think about all the hands-on effort that it took to bring them to us. We hope you do, too!

Black Walnut Health Benefits

If you're watching your cholesterol, these nuts can help make your diet a whole lot tastier. Black walnuts are very low in saturated fat, yet very high in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, which are the good fats that can lower bad cholesterol while maintaining good cholesterol.

Adding a few of these nuts to any dish can help boost its protein, iron and fiber content without adding sugar. They also make a nutritionally similar substitute for the tree nuts that are enjoyed in the now-popular and healthy Mediterranean diets.

You can even eat black walnuts for better overall cardiovascular health, as they contain large amounts of omega-3 fats, which help support cardiovascular function.

Walnut Studies

1) Lower Cholesterol Levels: Walnuts are one of the richest food sources of of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid, which may help lower cholesterol levels. Researchers have compared the effects of walnut and fatty fish consumption on the risk of developing coronary heart disease. They found that although both food sources are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, walnut consumption was more effective at lowering LDL "bad" cholesterol in healthy patients than fatty fish consumption. These findings were published in a 2009 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

2) Powerful Antioxidants: Walnuts are loaded with protective polyphenols! Compared to nine different types of raw and roasted nuts, walnuts contained the highest total polyphenol content, as demonstrated in a 2012 study published in the journal Food & Function. Polyphenols have antioxidant properties that have been associated with the prevention of degenerative diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases and cancers.

3) Stress Relief: Eating a handful of walnuts may help ease your mind. A 2010 study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition examined the effect of walnut and walnut oil consumption on adults with elevated LDL cholesterol levels. They found that eating walnuts helped the adults reduce their blood pressure both at rest and during times of stress.

“I received your package today with much anticipation. Loved the toasted walnuts, wild about the chocolate covered walnuts. And, what I couldn't really believe, a pound of hulled black walnuts, fresh and oh so wonderful. Anyone that has actually gone to the trouble of cracking black walnuts will appreciate the value of one pound of black walnut meat for $13.99. I'm going to ship a pound to my sister who loves them as much as I do. That's as far into the box as I've gotten so far. You now have another loyal customer.

“Just received my order - wow that was fast for US/Canada shipping, and everything is super. Top notch quality products, and things I can't find here like rye chips and black walnuts. Very very pleased, will definitely be a repeat customer!”

“Ok. I didn't know what I was getting into when I ordered black walnuts for my mom for Christmas! Wow! I'm so happy I did. Mom lives in Arkansas and is 83 years old. She knows a good black walnut when she tastes it. She sounded kinda pitiful the other day when she started hinting that they were all gone and she was craving some real bad. She said they were the best black walnuts she had ever tasted! Well, I love my mom to death and I don't want her doing without anything. Asking for nuts is not a big deal.....especially since I know where to come to.

Thank you Nuts Online! I just ordered a 5 lb. bag for her about 2 hours past and they have already shipped. Nuts Online you are amazing. Super service and wonderful fresh products.
